CAIRO — The Worth County softball team finally did it.
The Lady Rams clinched the program’s first ever outright region title with an 8-7 win at Cairo on Thursday thanks to another strong pitching game from Worth’s Kari Hathcock.
In 2000-2001, Worth County shared a region title with Crisp County.
The Lady Rams finished with a 12-1 record in Region 1-AAA and as a result earn the No. 1 seed in the sectional tournament at Dublin, which begins Oct. 17-18.
“Our girls are really excited,” Lady Rams coach Russ Beard said. “We have a really young team, so I feel like we’ve set the foundation for years to come.”
Hathcock, a senior, picked up the win in the pitcher’s circle. She threw five innings and was relieved by Kelley Weaver, who threw two innings for the save.
The Lady Rams trailed, 4-1, heading into the fourth, before putting up seven runs in the next two innings to take command.
“We hit the ball well, we played great defense, we had good pitching,” Beard said. “I’d say it was a pretty good all-around performance.”
